to continue the trend of: you can make me like anything by pairing that with something i already think is awesome; dmc 5 made me look up a bunch of willian blake poetry. it's hype stuff girls. Now im into poetry more than i was before.

credit to my dad who first foubd out about this theory by making me really like the beatles by showing me a musical made of beatles songs.

France win the World Cup 2018!

But every single team won our hearts this year (except you, Germany, you can fuck off lmao)

France 🇫🇷, the second youngest team in this WC, shone bright and clear. They were unstoppable, and even though they had quite conceded, they fought back. Umtiti and Varane, walls for the French team. Pogba and Kante, the players working behind the scenes. Griezmann and Giroud, and Mbappe. Mbappe! 19 years old! Nineteen! He's written history for his country, and man, he's definitely on his way to be one of the greatest. And let's not forget Hugo Lloris' briliance, despite the mistake he made this match.

Croatia 🇭🇷 defied all odds. Having had only 4.1 % chance to win the World Cup which was predicted before the world cup started.The likes of Rakitic and Modric in the midfield, the lethality of Mandzukic and Rebic up front, and the strength of the might Subasic!They reached the finals and made the population of 4.1 million it's proudest ever in Croatian football history, stomping Argentina and the favourites like England.

England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, despite the crazy loud fans, gave the English people hope. "It's coming home" started off as a joke, seriously, they knew their team were going to go out early, due to the pathetic performance of recent years. But heck, they reached the semi finals and them fans dont know what to do except revel in the moment. They fought well, but you can't expect the team not to bottle when they have 5 Spurs player in it (LOL). But anyway, great performance by the team, and I can see them shining in the coming future

Belgium 🇧🇪! The golden era! Hazard, Lukaku, De Bryune, Mertens, and Carasco! A flawless counter attack, a set piece adpated midfield, and a brick defense. A shame they didnt make it to the finals, they really were amazing and consistent throughout the tournament, and thanks to one of its players, Batshuayi, we have the golden meme😂

Brazil 🇧🇷!!! Oh well. What can I say for this team?

I supported them in 2006, 2010, and 2018. Only switched in 2014 because Argentina were excelling and I had to support my idol, Messi, for once.

The reason I support Brazil? Brazil's style of football was, unique. You see, all these years, no team had ever entertained me like Brazil (but this year, every team entertained me, except Spain) , it's Ginga and the dance to the game every individual participates, the samba that ripples through the pitch and out to all the fans.

But this year, despite the hype before the WC, we lost to Belgium in the quarter final, an excellent team.

We lost Dani Alves before the WC due to injury, and just imagine if we had him in the squad, how lethal would it be to have Marcelo and Alves running both sides of the pitch? And just imagine if Ney played like 2014. His antics this wc are to blame, it was in excess and just like Ronaldo said, we expected more from him.

But then again, I do not want to look at the negative side of the team. The other stars shone in the team, Coutinho, Willian, and Costa. Exceptional performance, and no matter what people say, I can totally see this young side achieving the Copa America 2019, and possibly, the World Cup 2022.

Many more teams I want to write about, really (Japan, especially) , but it's best I end it with the team I had supported.

This World Cup kept me on my feet, was a surprising and exciting spectacle. All the teams came prepared. Four years worth of training, practicing set pieces, analyzing potential opponents, and the determination, courage, loyalty spewed was overwhelming.

Alas, four years come and ago, now you guys will not see anymore World Cup posts from me until 2022 lol.

Congratulations to France, once again.

The Chocolate Boy, through the words of Nikhil Menon

There came a boy from the streets of Pennsylvania, ambitious and hungry as he was finding his feet in the world of football. Christian as young as one could be was left alone for making his own decision whether to pursue football or to look elsewhere. Having had his first taste of the beautiful game in England, it didn't take long for him to unearth a profound desire to make it to the very top. Having shown the signs of an exciting youth prospect, Christian's parents wanted their son to be nurtured & nourished by a capable European giant. After rejecting a few including the famed La Masia, it was Borussia Dortmund who managed to land the 16 y/o American. Joining the black & yellow academy at the age of 16, Pulisic lived up to the hype surrounding him which caught the attention of many. After a year with the U17 side, Pulisic was brought onto the biggest of stages and given his debut at the age of 17.

Since then Pulisic became a mainstay and relished the opportunity of adorning the famous black and yellow kit in front of the avid 80,000 fanatics who packed up the Signal Iduna Park. Pulisic soon turned out to be one of the most sought out young & brightest wingers in the world of football. He did attract a lot of clubs but Chelsea made a breakthrough in securing his signature under the Sarri year. This big money move did certainly raise a lot of questions from the fans and the media, noticably one of which was that, "Is Christian Pulisic worth this much money" ? In his first Premier League season, Pulisic missed a big chunk of the season but still managed to bag double digits in G/A. The rejuvenation of Christian Pulisic post lockdown was nothing short of pure delight for fans as well as for Chelsea as it turned out pretty crucial for the top 4 survival. His blistering cameo versus Liverpool and also match winning performances against the likes of Manchester City were such games which exhibited his sheer class and talent only to be acclaimed as one of the best young wingers currently in the whole of Europe. The #10 Jersey in football carries a unique tradition to it. The one endorsed with it has certain responsibilities, certain legacy related to it. In the last decade, a certain Belgian had worn the coveted #10 jersey for us for 6 seasons straight, leading us into every game fearless. But the departure of him and handing over the #10 to Willian had a split opinion. The rightful heir, as many believe, to the void left out by Eden should be and has been accorded to none other than Christian Pulisic who had a scintillating debut and won every single heart out there. If there ever is a more suited player to get the show on the road and spearhead Chelsea's attack entering into the Lampard era it's the American starboy. A new era has begun, the torch has been passed to the one who is brave and young as he will ever be, It is time for #CP10. Yours Truly,

Taming <code>this</code> In JavaScript With Bind Operator

Do you want to discover the next exciting JavaScript features that you didn’t even know you needed? In this article, I will introduce one of these proposals that if accepted may change the way you write code the same way the spread operator did.

However, here’s a small disclaimer: This feature is under development and discussion. The goal here is to add some hype around it and create awareness of the hard work that TC39 is doing to find consensus, fix all the syntax and semantics issues and have it shipped with the next releases of ECMAScript. If you have any concerns, comments or desire to express your support, please go to the TC39 proposals repository, add a star to this feature to show your support, open an issue to voice your concerns and get involved.

But before, I want to ask a simple (but tricky) question:

What is this?

In ECMAScript, this has a different semantic than this in many other programming languages, where this often refers to the lexical scope. In general, this behaves differently in the global scope, within a function, in non-strict mode and strict mode. Let’s break this behavior down into small examples.

Getting workflow just right ain’t an easy task. So are proper estimates. Or alignment among different departments. That’s why we’ve set up “this-is-how-I-work”-sessions — with smart cookies sharing what works well for them. A part of the Smashing Membership, of course.

this In The Global Scope

What is the value of this in this example?

console.info(this);

At the global scope, this refers to the global object, like the window in the browser, self on web workers and the module.exports object in NodeJS.

this In The Function Scope

At the function scope, this behaves depending on how the function is called, and this aspect makes it tricky to predict its value. We can understand it better by checking the following examples:

What Is The Value Of this Here?

function foo() { return this; } console.info(this);

Inside a function, this starts to have an interesting behavior since its value depends on how the function is called. In the example above, this still refers to the global scope, with one difference. In NodeJs, this will point to the global object instead of module.exports.

Setting A Value Into this:

function foo() { this.bar = 'baz'; return this; } console.info(foo()); console.info(new foo());

Setting a value into this sets the value into the current context. The example above logs the global scope with the property bar with the value baz in the first console.info, but it logs only { bar: ‘baz’ } in the second console.info. It happens because the new operator among other things bounds the value of this to the newly created object.

This Keyword In The Strict Mode

In strict mode, the this variable doesn’t carry the value of the context implicitly, this means if its context isn’t set, the value of this is default to undefined as shown in the following snippet.

function foo() { "use strict"; return this; } console.info(foo()); //undefined

To set the context of this in strict mode you can set the function as member of an object, use new operator, Function.prototype.call(), Function.prototype.apply() or Function.prototype.bind() methods for example.

Making this Variable Predictable

At this point, you may realize that the value of this in ECMAScript is quite tricky to predict. To demonstrate the available techniques to make it predictable, I’d like to present the following example that mimics a common use case of this.

In the example above, I created a MeowctComponent, which has only one property paw that points to the button element and one method called meow that should print the paw instance property into the console.

The tricky part is that the meow method is executed only when the button is clicked, and because of that, this has the button tag as context, and since the button tag does not have any paw property, it logs the undefined value into the console. Tricky, isn’t it?

To fix this specific behavior we can leverage on the Function.prototype.bind() method to explicitly bind this to the cat instance, like in the following example:

The method .bind() returns a new permanently bound function to the first given parameter, which is the context. Now, because we bound the cat.meow method to the cat instance, this.paw inside the meow method correctly points to the button element.

As an alternative to the Function.prototype.bind() method, we can use the arrow function to achieve the same result. It keeps the value of the lexical this of the surrounding context and dispenses the need to bind the context explicitly, like in the next example:

Although arrow functions solve the majority of use cases where we need to bind the lexical this explicitly, we still have two use cases for which the use of the explicit bind is needed.

Calling A Known Function Using this To Provide Context:

let hasOwnProp = Object.prototype.hasOwnProperty; let obj = Object.create(null); obj.hasOwnProperty('x') // Type Error... hasOwnProp.call(obj, "x"); //false obj.x = 100; hasOwnProp.call(obj, "x"); // true

Let's suppose for any reason we have this obj object that doesn't extend Object.prototype but we need to check if obj has an x property by using the hasOwnProperty method from Object.prototype. To achieve that, we have to use the call method and explicitly pass obj as the first parameter to make it work as expected, which appears not to be so idiomatic.

Extracting A Method

The second case can be spotted when we need to extract a method from an object like in our MeowctComponent example:

These use cases are the baseline problem that the bind operator tries to solve.

The Bind Operator ::

The Bind operator consists of an introduction of a new operator :: (double colon), which acts as syntax sugar for the previous two use cases. It comes in two formats: binary and unary.

In its binary form, the bind operator creates a function with its left side is bound to this of the right side, like in the following example:

let hasOwnProp = Object.prototype.hasOwnProperty; let obj = Object.create(null); obj.hasOwnProperty('x') // Type Error... obj::hasOwnProp("x"); //false obj.x = 100; obj::hasOwnProp("x"); // true

That looks more natural, doesn’t it?

In its unary form, the operator creates a function bound to the base of the provided reference as a value for this variable, like in the following example:

... cat.paw.addEventListener('click', ::cat.meow); // which desugars to cat.paw.addEventListener('click', cat.meow.bind(cat)); ...

What’s so cool about the bind operator is the fact that it opens up new opportunities for creating virtual methods, as in this example of lib for iterable.

import { map, takeWhile, forEach } from "iterlib"; getPlayers() ::map(x => x.character()) ::takeWhile(x => x.strength > 100) ::forEach(x => console.log(x));

It’s super useful because the developer doesn’t need to download the whole lib to do small stuff, which reduces the amount of imported JavaScript. Besides, it makes those kinds of libs easier to extend.

How To Develop Using Bind Operator

To keep the example simple, let’s suppose we need to create a math module which the developer can chain the operations to form an math expression that, given a number as an entry it could make all calculations into a pipeline. The code to achieve this is simple and could be written as the following.

function plus(x) { return this + x; } function minus(x) { return this - x; } function times(x) { return this * x; } function div(x) { return this / x; }

As you can spot in the example above, we expect to have the value as a context and we use this to make the calculation, so then using the bind operator, we could make an expression like the following:

1::plus(2)::times(4)::div(3)::minus(1); // returns 3

Which is equivalent to:

minus.call(div.call(times.call(plus.call(1, 2), 4), 3), 1);

The first snippet looks more idiomatic, isn’t?

Going a little further, we can use it to convert a temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit, this can be accomplished by the following function expression:

const toFahrenheit = x => x::times(9)::div(5)::plus(32); console.info(toFahrenheit(20)); // 68

So far, we demonstrate how create functions to interact with the values, but what about extending the object with virtual methods? We can do new stream compositions mixing built-in methods with custom ones. To demonstrate it, we can compose string methods with custom ones. First, let's check the module with the custom methods with its implementation.

function capitalize() { return this.replace(/(?:^|\s)\S/g, a => a.toUpperCase()); } function doubleSay() { return `${this} ${this}`; } function exclamation() { return `${this}!`; }

With this module in place we can do cool things like the following:

const { trim, padEnd } = String.prototype; console.info( ' hello world ' ::trim() ::capitalize() ::doubleSay() ::exclamation() ::padEnd(30) ); // "Hello World Hello World! "

In the example above, you can spot that I extracted two methods from the String.prototype, trim() and padEnd(). Since these methods are extracted, I can use them to compose my stream of methods alongside with my virtual methods capitalize(), doubleSay() and exclamation(). This aspect is what makes bind operator so exciting and promising.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Bind Operator

As you may realize at this point, there are some aspects that Bind Operator shines. Those are the following:

It covers the only two missing use cases that explicit bind is necessary;

It makes easy to make this variable to be predictable;

It adds a new way to extend functionality by using virtual methods;

It helps to extend built-in objects without extending the prototype chain. Do you remember Smoosh Gate?

In the other side, to compose functions with bind operator you need to rely on this to be bound, that can lead to some issues like in this example:

const plus = (x) => this + x; console.info(1::plus(1)); // "[object Window]1"

As it becomes clear in the example above, it’s not possible to compose arrow function with bind operator, since it’s not possible to bind this to an arrow function. Sometimes users don’t want to rely on this to be bound to compose their behavior through a function chain, which could be a problem if you only use bind operator to achieve this.

Another issue that is often said is the possible syntax overload that the bind operator can bring which can be a problem to onboard newcomers to the language. Realizing that a specific operator works in binary and unary form is tricky as well. One possible solution for this is to introduce the binary form to the language separately of the unary form. So once the binary form is integrated to the language, the committee can reassess if the unary form is still necessary. Meanwhile, users can get used to the binary form, and the syntax overload could potentially be mitigated.

Conclusion

Predict the value of this in JavaScript is trick. The language has some rules to explain how the context is assigned to this, but in the daily basis we want to make this value predictable. The Function.prototype.bind() method and arrow functions help us to make the value of this predictable. The bind operator comes to play to cover the two use cases that we still need to explicitly bind this.

The advent of bind operator opens an opportunity to create a new set of function composition via virtual methods, but it can add a syntax overload making difficult to onboard newcomers to the language.

The author of the bind operator is Kevin Smith, and this proposal is in Stage 0. The TC39 is open to feedback. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s teams were built to fail

If you can’t buy the best players of any nationality, you can’t build a system around the talents of one player.

There are 14 teams still alive in the 2018 World Cup, and none of them are Portugal or Argentina. The teams of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the undisputed two best players of the last decade, will once again fail to win a World Cup. Incredibly, neither player has ever scored in the knockout stage.

For perhaps the first time, neither player’s team was ever considered among the big favorites to win the tournament. France, Brazil, Spain, a wildly disappointing Germany, and perennial dark-horses Belgium all had shorter odds at most bookies. Post-group stage, England and Croatia had picked up a lot more hype as well. It was clear from the first game of the World Cup that Argentina simply didn’t have the talent to support Messi, while Portugal’s plans A, B, C and D all involved some variation of “Ronaldo wins us the game.”

These were never really “teams.” Portugal and Argentina were intended, as Real Madrid and Barcelona often are, to be support systems for their superstar players. But those national teams had a big problem — this doesn’t work nearly as well for international sides as it does for big clubs.

Madrid and Barcelona have both the benefit of signing players from any country and the money to attract just about anyone they want. It makes sense for Ronaldo and Messi’s clubs to put them in the exact roles that they want to play, then re-arrange the other pieces around them to get the best out of them. If one player isn’t a good fit, it’s easy to sell them and buy another one. These clubs can even go out and sign rare and ultra-specific specialty players because they’re the biggest teams in the world and only compete with each other for talent.

Obviously, Portugal and Argentina can’t do this, but they tried to set up their tactics as if they could. This was a terrible idea — the roles that Messi and Ronaldo play at club level only work because their clubs could go out and acquire the necessary accompanying pieces. But trying to keep Messi and Ronaldo in those roles put Portugal into situations where Adrien Silva was trying to do the same work as Luka Modrić, and Argentina into a spot where they failed to get Messi the ball without a player analogous to Andrés Iniesta or Philippe Coutinho.

This stands in stark contrast to the philosophies of the opponents that knocked out Messi and Ronaldo on Saturday. Neither Edinson Cavani or Luis Suárez plays in a defensive, direct 4-4-2 at club level, but they adapted their games to get the most out of each other and fit the system of Uruguay manager Óscar Tabárez. France boss Didier Deschamps is often criticized for using a negative style that fails to let Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann perform to the best of their abilities, but they executed the roles they were given in his conservative system.

Portugal and Argentina were arguably better teams in Messi and Ronaldo’s younger days, when they were important role players asked to fit a system, rather than superstars that teams were built around. Whether or not their national team managers could have turned back the clock at this World Cup is debatable — both Messi and Ronaldo are so used to having teams built completely around them at this point that going back to being simply important role players would take more than a month of training sessions to get right. But with the benefit of hindsight, knowing that their teams exited in the Round of 16, we can say they certainly should have tried.

Looking ahead, it’s easy to see a similar problem brewing with Brazil. They seem entirely dependent on Neymar doing Neymar Things, but they could really use an Adrien Rabiot or Giovani Lo Celso to stick in their midfield. The Seleção could really use Kylian Mbappe on the opposite wing instead of Willian too. But as Brazil currently exists, it’s pretty easy for opposing defenses to cheat to one side, harassing Neymar and Marcelo, in a way that club teams could never cheat against Neymar’s Barca and PSG teams.

As an international manger, unless you have the benefit of the most stocked golden generation that a country could ever dream of, trying to structure an international team around one superstar — and especially trying to match that structure to a player’s top-level club team — doesn’t appear to work at the moment. Having the restriction of selecting players from one country means a manager isn’t going to have the perfect complimentary pieces to choose from.

The best international teams find a way of playing that fits a lot of its players, and that’s why this year’s World Cup won’t be won by Argentina or Portugal. The stars of this World Cup have been the highly adaptable players — the likes of Luka Modrić, Edinson Cavani, Christian Eriksen, Philippe Coutinho, and even 19-year-old Kylian Mbappe, who’s played numerous attacking roles in a variety of systems during his short career.

Messi and Ronaldo haven’t failed at the World Cup because they’re not good enough, or because they lack the mentality to produce on the big stage. It’s because, through some combination of their coaches’ inability to assert their authority and their own egos, their teams weren’t built for success in international soccer.

"Definitely an upgrade": Three stats suggest some Chelsea fans are over-hyping 20y/o prodigy

With Eden Hazard having finally departed for Real Madrid this summer and a transfer ban threatening to drive a huge wedge between them and their free-spending competition, Chelsea have a mountain to climb next season if they are to achieve the ideal top-four finish.

Firstly, replacing the electric Belgian’s impact in the final third looks nigh on impossible. Hazard chalked up 16 goals and 15 assists in the Premier League last term.

However, at least Blues fans can look forward to the arrival of Christian Pulisic. His switch to Stamford Bridge was delayed due to Borussia Dortmund’s insistence that the speedster be loaned straight back to them after the two clubs agreed a deal worth £58m in January.

The 20-year-old can be considered one of the hottest talents to come out of America, but the stellar form of Jadon Sancho saw him make just nine league starts for BVB in 2018/19. The USA international will surely be hoping that he can nail down a starting spot under Frank Lampard.

With the addition of Pulisic one of few things to be excited about, these Chelsea fans can be forgiven for hyping up their new winger ahead of the new season.

Key passes

With 2.1 dribbles per game to his name last season, Pulisic is a threat when allowed to drive at the opposition but his usage of the ball could do with some work. The hot-heeled wide man completes 1 key pass per game, whereas Willian completes an impressive 2.5.

Of course, the Brazilian recorded just one more goal contribution (nine total) than Chelsea’s new signing (eight total) despite having an extra 1,185 minutes under his belt. Yet, the lack of a prolific striker – Gonzalo Higuain netted just five and Olivier Giroud two – who can put away chances with regularity indicates that Willian’s underwhelming stats are perhaps misleading.

Fortunately, the return of Tammy Abraham, who netted 25 goals while on loan at Aston Villa last term, means that the Blues will have at least one form striker come August, while Michy Batshuayi also impressed for Crystal Palace, scoring five times.

If Pulisic is to outshine his competition in this department, he has to pick his head up and start making the incisive passes.

Passing accuracy

Possession was the name of the game for Maurizio Sarri last term, achieving 59.9% and, while the same may not be said for Lampard, whose Derby team averaged 53.4%, the importance of being able to find a pass with consistency remains.

Pulisic picks out a teammate with just 79.5% of his passes, while all Blues midfielders and defenders registered at least 80%.

The former PA Classics youngster is always looking to make things happen with an ambitious forward pass or run but there are times when being conservative and simply retaining the ball is preferable.

The 5-foot 7 attacker has plenty of work to do on the training ground if he is to prevent himself from being a liability in that department.

Crossing

With Europa League top-scorer Giroud a prime candidate to start the season as first-choice striker, frequency of balls into the box will surely soar.

Former Shakhtar Donetsk man Willian will have no problem finding his big French target. The 30-year-old completed a team-high 1.2 accurate crosses per game last term, however, Pulisic could do with some practise.

The starlet delivered just 0.4 accurate balls into the 18-yard per game last season and will struggle to dislodge Willian from the starting XI if he can’t prove to Lampard that he can hit Giroud’s head on a regular basis.

If Pulisic cannot make the wing spot his own, the prospect of vying for a starting place in the number 10 role with Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley is an unenviable one.
